From hiring to housing, policing to sentencing, artificial intelligence and data-driven systems are increasingly shaping our civil rights—often in invisible ways. Far from being neutral, these technologies are amplifying bias, and the Big Tech companies that build them are impacting, and often harming, democracy, equity, and the environment.

At the Kenmore Community Club's next Dinner and Discussion, July 8, 2026, Attorney and Technologist Shankar Narayan will discuss "A.I., Civil Rights, and the Fight for a Just Future."

As artificial intelligence invades every part of our lives at seemingly breakneck speed, discussions of how the technology will affect our jobs, our educational systems, and shape our political landscape are happening everywhere. How it might affect our civil rights and our laws, has not been as widely discussed, but is by no means the least of the risks posed by AI to society.

In this talk, Shankar Narayan explores how AI and Big Tech are reshaping our rights today —including historical and current risks to equity and justice, and opportunities for communities to build a more just technological future.

Narayan is a graduate of Yale Law School and works as an advocate, attorney, writer, teacher, and changemaker for rights and equity. His law practice and consultancy focuses on technology policy. He serves on the board of CETI (A Creative and Emergent Technology Institute), and have previously worked as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington.
