Every second of every day, an older adult suffers a fall in the United States, making falls the leading cause of injury and injury death in this age group. One out of four older adults will fall yearly in the United States, making falls a public health concern, particularly among the aging population.
As we observe Falls Prevention Awareness Week from September 23-27, we're reminded that while falls can happen at any age, they are often preventable.
The CDC recommends that older adults:
Speak up after a fall: It's important to inform your doctor, who may need to adjust your medications or suggest other preventive measures.
Get regular eye and foot exams: Stay current with your prescriptions and foot care to reduce fall risks.
Make your home safer: Simple changes like securing rugs, decluttering, and installing grab bars and better lighting can make a big difference.
Stay active: Engaging in exercises that improve balance and strength, particularly in the legs and core.
The YMCA is here to support you with Active Older Adult group fitness classes specifically designed for low impact, functional movements that build strength, which is essential in preventing falls and sustaining independence.
